Three ten packs of the TI –Nspire calculators have been purchased from the HACF funds and are already in use in the high school math classrooms. Every additional set we get allows us to pass the packs between the 7 math teachers and do some pretty amazing lessons using the technology on a more regular basis. We really appreciate the support of the foundation’s very generous gift. We have already increased the amount of technology our students are using this year compared to what we were doing at this time last year thanks to your incredible gift. The more they are used, the more comfortable the students and teachers are becoming with them which only increases our desire to use them. It’s been pretty exciting to see how quickly the kids dig in to a lesson if the TI Nspires are a part of it!
The photos and videos are from a recent lesson in Honors Algebra 2 with sophomores. We are studying quadratic functions. One example of the quadratic function is the breaking distance in a car at varying speeds. As the speed of the car increases, so does the necessary breaking distance. The students compared three different scenarios: normal road surfaces, wet road surfaces, and distracted driving while using a cell phone. Data was graphed and compared. It was interesting to watch them work through the data and make some comparisons based on speed and driving conditions.
THANK YOU again for allowing us to engage our students with applications of mathematics through the TI Nspire. I really believe your foundation is making a difference in their lives.
